Radlett’s Girl Guides have sprung into spring with a special Activity Day.

Organised by district leader Nicola Day and a team of Guide leaders, the Spring Activity Day aimed to raise money to enable the group to visit World Girlguiding’s “Our Chalet” in 2015.

The event offered a range of activities including planting ferns and other woodland plants, along with a demonstration on carving wood sculptures from Will Lee of Chainsaw-Carvings.

The activity day is also part of an ongoing environmental project by the group to regenerate the woodlands around the Guide Hut in Scrubbits Park Road.

The project started in autumn last year after several trees were lost due to a disease and the group has since made the decision to fight back the overgrown brambles, replace the fallen trees and re-establish the grounds as a natural activity area.

Catherine Bilsborough, district commissioner, said: “We are enormously grateful to everyone who has been involved in this project. The girls aged five to 17 have had so much fun being part of such an inspirational scheme to regenerate our grounds. This work will not only benefit our local wildlife but also provide the perfect outdoor area for Guiding activities.

“We very much look forward to seeing the grounds establish and the plants and bulbs mature in the coming years. We have already enjoyed the benefits of the newly planted daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells. Everyone who has worked on this scheme should be extremely proud of what has been achieved."
