A synagogue has raised more than £1,000 for a primary school in Zimbabwe.

Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue, in Watling Street, Radlett, celebrated ten years of service by staging a production of show The Rain That Washes.

The play was inspired by the synagogue's caretaker Chris Maphosa, who grew up in politically turbulent Zimbabwe.

Writer and director Dave Carey created the play after conversations with Mr Maphosa, and it has since toured the country.

Despite playing at the Edinburgh Fringe, the 130-strong audience at the synagogue was the show's largest to date.

The profits from the evening and a collection led to a cheque of £1,370 being presented for Gohole No2 primary school in Mr Maphosa’s hometown in Zimbabwe.

He said: "I’m overwhelmed by the support and the amount raised. The parents of the children at this school can barely afford to send their children to school with a ball point pen. This will make an enormous difference to their lives."
