A group of early years teachers have received an award for their “outstanding” work.

The teachers from Meryfield Community Primary School in Theobold Street, Borehamwood, collected their Hertfordshire Quality Standard Award at a special presentation evening on March 26.

The group were assessed by the county early years advisory team, who examined every aspect of teaching and learning in their school’s nursery and reception classes.

Rachel Mead, early years leader at the school, said: "We are very proud to have received this award. Our staff believe in our children and work very hard to give them the best possible start to achieve their full potential."

Meryfield has just over 100 children aged between three and five in its nursery and reception classes.

Headteacher Rosemarie Alexander said: "It is essential that our children have a high quality provision, particularly in the early years, as it provides the foundation for their continuing success as learners.

“We are extremely fortunate in having wonderful children and a superb staff team that all share the same ethos."

The school, which has almost 400 children and is expanding to two forms of entry to meet the growing demand for primary school places in the town, was also assessed as "outstanding" by the assessor for the National Inclusion Mark Award in 2013.

John Cooper, chairman of the school’s governing body, said: "I would like to congratulate the staff, children and their families for this award. Meryfield is a success story based upon relentless hard work and a belief that our children deserve the very best."
