A grandfather has hit out at “atrocious” repair work after builders fixing his neighbour's shed left “gaping holes” in the roof of his own.

Derek Ereira, of Manor Way, Borehamwood, is growing increasingly frustrated as one month after the incident, he has still not received compensation for the damage.

The 70-year-old gave permission for Affinity Sutton contractors to remove the roof of his semi detached outbuilding because his neighbour's shed was ridden with asbestos.

But when workmen came to reattach it, he claims they did not seal the adjoining shed roof, leaving huge gaps in the building.

It left the shed exposed to rainwater and destroyed the fridge freezer he kept stored there.

He said: “It is ridiculous, it’s mad. How can they leave me like this? It was disgusting - rainwater began pouring in and I couldn't do anything but watch.

“It’s very shoddy. When we get heavy winds again, it looks like it will blow straight through.

“I’m worried I am going to have to foot the bill for this myself. It’s going to cost a small fortune to repair the damage.”

Mr Ereira was left disabled by a failed hip operation two years ago, and he also suffers from problems with his knees and his eyes.

He relies on the extra food stored in the fridge freezer on days when he is too weak to leave the house.

Since the incident on February 17, he is yet to hear from Affinity Sutton about how the damage can be repaired and what compensation he could be entitled to.

He said: “I don’t blame my neighbour for this - she’s an absolute doll. But the whole thing is atrocious, Affinity Sutton need to pull their finger out.

“I’m angry I’ve not heard back from anybody after almost one month, although I try not to get stressed about these things. Life is too short, but I want it sorted.”

The Borehamwood Times is awaiting comment from Affinity Sutton.
