School pupils witnessed government in action when they visited Hertsmere Borough Council.

Business studies students from Yavneh College put questions to Hertsmere mayor Councillor Paul Morris, and council leader Cllr Morris Bright when they visited the civic offices in Elstree Way, Borehamwood yesterday.

The ten BTEC students, all aged 16 and 17, also learned about council services and local democracy.

Student Alex Bright co-ordinated the visit with Rose Painter, a teacher at the Hillside Avenue school.

Alex said: “The visit helped to reinforce what we have been learning about local government and we got the chance to ask the mayor and leader more about their roles and about other issues that are relevant in the area, such as planning and Elstree Studios.”

Cllr Morris added: “It was fantastic to see such a high level of interest in local government among the students and they raised some probing questions about my role and that of the council more widely. Hopefully the visit brought home how important it is for people to vote and have their say in how services in the local area are delivered.”
