Two Hertsmere schoolchildren have been chosen to raise the flag for the Commonwealth Day after winning a borough-wide competition.

Edan Phillips, nine, who attends Hartsbourne School in Bushey will be joining the Mayor of Hertsmere Paul Morris after he correctly named all 53 Commonwealth Flags.

He will be joined by runner up, Jasmine Njuki, eight, from Monksmead School in Borehamwood.

Cllr Morris said: “This is the first time Hertsmere is holding celebrations to mark Commonwealth Day and having two local schoolchildren – Edan and Jasmine – join me to help lead the ceremony makes it even more special.”

As part of nationwide celebrations flags will be raised across the country to mark Britain’s commitment to the Commonwealth and its values.

At the event on Monday at 10am, the Mayor will read a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation before raising the Commonwealth flag.
