A young West End star with an “angelic” singing voice has been chosen as a finalist in a national music awards.

Ilan Galkoff, ten, who recently played the part of Gavroche in Les Miserables at the Queens Theatre in London, hopes his star quality will impress judges during the final of the Emunah Young Singer of the Year award.

The pupil of Hertsmere Jewish Primary School in Radlett, who lives in Borehamwood, will perform in the finals at the Royal Academy of Music in London on March 9.

Ilan started singing aged six, and as well as his success in the West End, has been involved in films and television series and has toured with director Cameron Mackintosh.

He gave his performance at the London heats of the competition a theatrical feel by dressing as a street urchin to sing a song from Oliver!

Ilan, who attends dance classes at Hertsmere Academy of Dance and Performing Arts, said: “I just love performing and I’m really happy to be in the finals.”

The competition helps raise cash for the Emunah charity, which supports 10,000 children in Israel who come from difficult backgrounds through its network of residential homes, counselling services, high schools and daycare centres.

Ilan’s mother Suzanne Galkoff said: “I’m very proud my son is using his musical talents to help others less fortunate like this. We’re very involved in the Jewish community and this is a very good cause.

“He will also be performing in an Old Time Music Hall production at The Ark Theatre to raise money for Hertsmere Mencap next month.

“Ilan loves singing and he has a very angelic voice. We don’t push him at all, he lives for performing and works very hard at it.”

Money will be raised through the sale of tickets and the winner of the competition will also receive a £200 prize for their school.
