People who encourage children to get on their bikes or walk to school could receive awards for their efforts.

Nominations are now being taken for Hertfordshire County Council’s 2014 School Travel Awards.

There are five categories: the school travel award for encouraging safe, active and green travel; road safety; school crossing patrol of the year; walking bus champion; walking and cycling best practice and school council innovation award.

Cllr Terry Douris, who is responsible for highways and transport, said: “These awards are an opportunity to thank people around the county who have played a role in promoting road safety.

"They are also a great way to encourage schools to promote sustainable transport to their students, as well as share best practice."

The deadline for nominations is February 7 and nominations can be made online at www.hertsdirect.org/schooltravel.

The winners will be announced at an award ceremony at Hertford Theatre on March 25.
