A firefighter passionate about helping children control their aggression has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Bob Williams, watch commander at Borehamwood Fire Station, is one of five firefighters in the country to be shortlisted for the Spirit of Fire Awards 2014, run by The Fire Fighters Charity.

The 48-year-old launched Boxcleva, a non-contact boxing club to help keep children off the streets, in 2012.

Since it began, instances of anti-social behaviour has dropped by almost 20 per cent in north Borehamwood.

Mr Williams said: “I was gobsmacked when I found out. It’s such an honour to be shortlisted and very exciting.

“I am really passionate about the children, and giving them something to focus on instead of being out on the streets. The children love coming to Boxcleva.

“I couldn’t have done this without the support of my wonderful family, colleagues and Boxcleva’s sponsors.”

The scheme, based in the Hertswood Centre, in Potters Lane, Borehamwood, also teaches children about drug awareness and healthy eating.

Mr Williams will find out if he has won the award at a glittering ball in Downing Street on May 16.

Chief Fire Officer for Hertfordshire Roy Wilsher said: “BoxCleva is a fantastic community safety initiative driven by the expertise and enthusiasm of Bob Williams and I am really pleased he has been shortlisted.”
