Firefighters in Borehamwood will go on strike this morning as the row over pensions continues.

The strike, which will run from 6.30am until 8.30am, is part of ongoing industrial action by firefighters arising from a dispute over government changes to their pay and pensions.

Councillor Richard Thake, who is in charge of community safety, sad he was disappointed talks between the Fire Brigades Union and the Government had broken down yet again.

He said: "Repeated strike action in a key public service like this is irresponsible. It is detrimental to the safety of the people of Hertfordshire and should not be used as a bargaining tool. We continue to hope for a speedy resolution to this ongoing national dispute and for further walkouts to be avoided."

Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher said the arrangements during previous strikes had worked well previously and urged people to call 999 in an emergency.

He said: “With fewer resources our ability to respond to incidents is reduced, therefore I urge the public to play their part again and take extra care during the strike action."
