Residents have accused Hertfordshire County Council of not doing enough to keep their town looking nice after it failed to repair an “eyesore” of a grass verge.

The verge in Studio Way in Borehamwood is being repeatedly churned up as people park their cars there.

Elvin Sorkin, who lives across the road, said it was an “eyesore”.

He added: “The grass verge has been ruined, it has been completely churned up. As well as being unsightly it’s also dangerous. A blind person or an old person coming along could slip on it and hurt themselves.”

Mr Sorkin said he had raised the issue with Councillor Richard Butler after he was asked to by his neighbour who had cancer and was distressed by the state of the verge.

But although the representative for Cowley Hill repeatedly asked Hertfordshire County Council’s Highways department to take action, all attempts failed.

Mr Sorkin added: “Hertfordshire's highways department should do something about it, by repairing the verge and preventing people from parking on it.

“I do not see why it has taken so long.”

Cllr Butler said he would keep putting pressure on the county council until the verge was repaired.

He said: “The verge is a disgrace. We want people to take pride in our town, we don’t want Borehamwood to look like a dump. How can we ask them to take care of it when the council fails to do its duty?”

“The council should be making people aware they should not park on grass verges and take action against those that do.”

A spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council said: “An inspection of Studio Way determined that there had been some minor verge damage.

“However, it was not considered a safety concern and as such was categorised a low priority. We will continue to monitor the situation and will take action in the future if necessary.”
