Penniwells Riding Stables in Elstree seeks donations for Christmas appeal
A riding stable that “changes the lives” of people with disabilities is asking members of the public to support it this Christmas.
Penniwells Riding Stables in Edgwarebury Lane, Elstree is asking for donations to help it continue working with the 140 disabled riders a week who use it.
It costs £3,000 a week to pay for the running costs of the stables and feed its 13 horses, and this comes entirely from fundraising and donations.
Penniwells group organiser Sarah Healing said: “Calculating how much it costs to run the stables a week was an eye-opener,
“The money will go straight to the ponies and we would be very grateful indeed to anyone who can contribute.”
The stables give lessons to people with a wide range of disabilities, including Down's syndrome, sight or hearing difficulties and learning and behavioural problems.
Some riders need minimal supervision, while others need three volunteers to help them ride a horse, a leader and two side helpers.
Ms Healing added: “Penniwells changes the lives of the children and adults who ride with us. The benefits of the exercise and being with the horses are huge for their physical and mental wellbeing.
“For many of our riders, this is the only chance they have to get out the house and meet other people.”
Tomorrow the stables will be hosting its annual awards evening and party attended by the Mayor of Hertsmere Cllr Paul Morris.
Awards will be presented to the winners of National Disabled Riding Championships which were held in Gloucestershire in July, regional championships and those who have shown progress in their therapy at the centre.
There will also be riding demonstrations from national and regional champions and volunteers.
The night will finish with a disco.
Ms Healing said: “The evening is our way of celebrating the successes of our riders and thanking our volunteers for their hard work over the year.”
The evening costs £5 with all proceeds going to the Christmas appeal.
