A man who gives up his time to transport people with learning disabilities has been recognised by an award.

Volunteer driver Richard Summers was presented with the Elisabeth Spector award by Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Clive Butchins at the Annual General Meeting of Hertsmere Mencap on Tuesday.

The award was in recognition of many years spent driving people with learning disabilities to a club in St Albans.

Chairman of Hertsmere Mencap Paul Moser said: “We are all very grateful to him, especially as he is often able to fill in for other drivers if they need to change their rota dates.”

The Elizabeth Spector award is presented in memory of Hertsmere Mencap’s late honourary secretary and representative to the national Royal Mencap Society.

Mr Moser added: “She was greatly respected and a key figure in the development of our society and an award is made to a volunteer in her name every year.”
