Hundreds of people gathered outside a supermarket to celebrate the Jewish festival of lights.

The sound of Chanukah music filled the air and children devoured doughnuts and chocolate coins as a menorah was lit outside Tesco in Shenley Road in Borehamwood.

Rabbi Rafi Garson of the Ohr Yisrael Synogogue in Theobald Street lit the first candle of the menorah.

The town Mayor, Clive Butchins lit the second and Paul Morris, Mayor of Hertsmere the third and fourth candles.

Borehamwood South County Councillor Rabbi Alan Plancey gave a short speech saying how when it comes to good deeds "Every Little Helps".

The event was organised by the Chabad of Borehamwod and Elstree and was attended by the local synagogues.

Rabbi Chaim Hoch said: “The menorah lighting was an inspirational event, bringing together members from different factions of the Borehamwood and Elstree community.”

Cllr Butchins added: “The menorah lighting event was wonderful and it was a privilege to be invited to take part.”
