More than 1,000 people braved the cold to greet the start of the Christmas season.

Shenley Road was yesterday transformed into a blaze of light when Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Clive Butchins switched on the lights.

Children slipped and slid on the ice rink or else spun around and around on the vintage carousel as they enjoyed all the fun of the winter fair.

There was standing room only in All Saints Church in Shenley Road as people gathered to sing traditional Advent carols and hymns and listen to performances from local choirs.

Borehamwood Brass Band performed traditional tunes and revellers were also treated to songs from the panto The Magic Toy Shop, which is going to be performed at the Ark Theatre later this month.

There were also refreshments on offer in the new library and community centre 96 Shenley Road.

Cllr Butchins said the day had been: “brilliant”.

He added: “Lots and lots of people turned up and everyone seemed to be very happy with the day.”

The family event was hosted by the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, which hopes to put on an even bigger spectacle next year.
