An organisation that feeds the poorest in society has been awarded a £3,000 grant to continue its good work.

Members of the community have chosen Borehamwood Foodbank as their favourite good cause in the area.

The organisation, which gives food to the most vulnerable in society, was awarded the 2013 Lloyds Bank Community Fund after receiving the most votes from members of the public.

11th Edgware Scout Group also received £3,000 and Brookside Boys Club and 1st Radlett Scout Group received £300 as part of the initiative, which is designed to help local people to have a positive impact at the heart of their communities.

Chairman of the foodbank Kristan Payne is delighted to receive the grant, which would enable the organisation to provide lunch and activities once a week for families in the school holidays.

She said: “We can purchase fresh food, fruit and vegetables and get a good supply of craft materials without depleting the Foodbank resources, which are needed for other areas of our work.

“Getting the grant also shows that local people support our project and this is a great encouragement to us.”

Members of the foodbank were out in force collecting food at Tesco in Shenley Road this weekend, and Ms Payne added the response from local people had been “amazing”.

Borehamwood Foodbank is one of 1,332 good causes in 333 communities that benefited from the Lloyds Bank community fund.

More than 2.3million people across the country cast votes online, in branches or by text message during September and October.

Graham Lindsay, who is group director for responsible business at the bank said: “Lloyds Bank scaled up the Community Fund considerably in 2013 and in return we have had an incredible response from the public, which has resonated right across the country.

“We know that receiving a promotional boost and public support is as important as the financial investment and can have a sustained impact on groups’ engagement with their local community over time.

“Congratulations to every community group that took part, we look forward to hearing about the difference being involved in the programme has made."
