Borehamwood teenager plans charity golf tournament at The Shire, Barnet, for SANDS
A teenager has single-handedly organised a charity event in an emotional tribute to a friend who gave birth to a stillborn baby.
Charlie Corbett, of Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood, said he “couldn’t sit back and do nothing” after the traumatic incident – so has planned a golf tournament to raise money for SANDS.
Close family friend Samantha Baker carried her daughter Ruby to full term without any complications – but the baby died on the morning she was due to give birth.
The 17-year-old has set himself an ambitious target of raising £7,000 for the charity, which supports families of stillborn children, at The Shire Golf Club, Barnet.
He said: “It’s very personal to me and my family. It was such a horrible and heartbreaking time for everyone because it was just so unexpected.
“I was determined to do something to help and raise awareness, it didn’t feel right just sitting back and doing nothing.
“It’s not a very well known charity but it should be.”
Arsenal supporter Charlie, a sixth former at St Michael’s School, Garston, has given up his half term to prepare for the event.
After hearing about his inspirational idea, various companies offered to donate raffle prizes – including a signed Arsenal shirt and a golfing trip to Celtic Manor, Wales, worth £3,000.
Charlie, who has already raised £6,000 for the charity, hopes to hold annual events to support SANDS.
He added: “It’s been a huge learning curve for me because I’ve had to try and haggle raffle prizes, but it’s all been worth it.
“I’ve really enjoyed planning it, it feels like a huge achievement. Really, it’s no trouble at all and I think it’s important we have charity events like this.
“All my friends and family have been so supportive. I really can’t wait for the big day now.”
The event will take place on Friday. To sponsor Charlie, visit www.justgiving.co.uk/charlie-corbett
