Kosmo Shotokan Karate Club moves to new venue thanks to donation from Hertfordshire County Councillor
A karate club is celebrating moving onto bigger and better things after a donation from a councillor.
Kosmo Shotokan Karate Club has been able to afford to move to Aberford Park Community Centre in Borehamwood thanks to funding from Hertfordshire County Councillor Leon Reefe.
The club, which was previously based at Brookside Boys Club in Buckton Road, had outgrown its old venue.
Sensei Moley Walsh, who owns the club, said she was “delighted” by the £1000 donation.
She said: “It is amazing Councillor Reefe gave us this money, we’re very grateful.
“All this money is going on fees for the new hall, we're hoping for a grant for new mats as well, as our old ones belonged to our previous venue.
"The new hall is much bigger, meaning there is room for us to expand.
"The floors are also better suited to karate and the hall is a lot more central, right next to the park.
Sensei Walsh started the club in 2008 with only one pupil, she now has more than 170 adults and children.
She said: “We have expanded very rapidly over the years, and it’s all been word of mouth.
"People have come here because other people have told them how good we are.”
As well as teaching people of all ages and abilities, the class offers lessons to people with dyspraxia, autism, anger issues and ADHD.
Sensei Walsh said: “Training improves their ability to concentrate. It improves their coordination and enables them to release stress and cope with anger problems.
“Once you’re training you don’t think about anything else, you forget all the problems of the day.”
Cllr Reefe said: “This karate club is ideal for helping youngsters learn the disciplines of self-defence as well as learning about fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
“It’s well worth support from my locality budget, particularly as it is in my division and helps mainly young people from Borehamwood.”
