Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in Elstree hosts Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow
Syria, parliamentary reform and comic impressions of MPs were among issues discussed when a school politics society hosted a special guest.
John Bercow MP visited Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Butterfly Lane in Elstree to talk to a large audience about his role as Speaker of the House of Commons.
Fresh from chairing a statement by the Foreign Secretary about Syria, the MP for Buckingham answered questions about his views on House of Lords reform and whether he struggled to remain impartial.
During the lunchtime visit on September 12, Mr Bercow described his work to involve young people in politics by hosting the UK Youth Parliament at the House of Commons and visiting schools.
He told boys about his work to make the Government more accountable to Parliament through summoning ministers to answer questions and giving power to select committees.
He also treated pupils to an impersonation of an anonymous veteran Conservative MP.
Head of Politics Stephen Clark said the school had been “deeply honoured” to welcome Mr Bercow, who answered all questions with "wit, charm and flair."
He said: “The Politics Society is extremely grateful to Mr Bercow for giving of his time so generously.
“We look forward to welcoming the authors Jesse Norman MP and Douglas Carswell MP later in the term.”
