Borehamwood businessman taking part in Cancer Research UK's Shine walk
2:00pm Sunday 22nd September 2013 in News
A Borehamwood businessman is walking 26 miles to combat cancer.
Mark Priestman, who lives in Greenside in Borehamwood, is taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Shine 2013 City of London night-time marathon next Saturday.
He will be joining over 10,000 walkers on a route weaving through central London – taking in such landmarks as the Houses of Parliament, the Royal Albert Hall and St Paul’s Cathedral.
Mr Priestman, 40, signed up to the walk to improve his health and that of others.
He said: “As I grow older it seems more and more of my friends are succumbing to cancer.
“I have five friends with the disease.
"I wanted to do something to help them and improve my health as well.
"All are doing well, but the work of CRUK is essential to looking after their and thousands of others medical and care needs.
Mr Priestman, a partner of Priestman Associates in Imperial Place, added: “I’m very much looking forward to the walk; London will look lovely at night."
He and his friend Martin Tester, who will be walking the half marathon, have been practising with seven-mile walks in Borehamwood and the surrounding area.
Mr Priestman added: “Borehamwood’s quite hilly, so I’m hoping the going will be a bit flatter in central London.”
He has already raised nearly £200 with donations from friends and a cake sale.
He added: “I’ve never done anything like this before so I had no idea how much I would raise.
“I’ve already nearly exceeded my target and I’m very grateful to everyone who has donated to this good cause.”
