MP for Hertsmere James Clappison's £91,000 expenses claim lower than average
The MP for Hertsmere has claimed far less than the average for this year’s expenses.
Figures released this month by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority show James Clappison claimed a total of £91,282.43 in the financial year from 2012/2013.
These figures include money spent on the constituency office, on travel, accommodation and the staffing payroll.
This is less than the average total spend of £148,621.97 claimed by MPs across the country.
However, Mr Clappison’s expenditure is higher than last year, when he claimed a total of £83,794.34.
His highest costs were the staff payroll, on which he spent £84.946.83, compared with £78,145.71 last year.
He spent £6335.60 on his constituency office and nothing on travel or accommodation.
Mr Clappison was unwilling to compare his expenditure to that of other MPs since he said each handled his or her office differently and worked in different conditions.
He said: “I do believe expenses should be made public. I don’t employ any family members, unlike other MPs.
“My staff are very good. The people I employ enable me to do my job properly and are very important to me.”
