Diabetes UK offers advice for Borehamwood diabetics over Yom Kippur
A diabetes charity is holding an awareness month to offer advice to the Jewish community in Borehamwood during the high holidays.
Diabetes UK is encouraging everyone with diabetes in the Jewish community to talk to their Rabbis about healthy eating as three major festivals during September focus on fasting or feasting.
Rosh Hashanah and Simchat Torat are both celebrated with sweet foods and Yom Kippur sees people take on a 25-hour fast - which can cause blood glucose levels to drop too low.
Jenne Patel, Diabetes UK Equality and Diversity Manager, said: “It’s important to consider your own personal situation before deciding whether to fast during Yom Kippur.
“If you do decide to fast and you treat your diabetes with insulin or other medication you may need to adjust the dose. This should be done in conjunction with your healthcare professional.”
