Mystery smell plagues Borehamwood, Radlett, Shenley, Aldenham
3:30pm Friday 6th September 2013 in News
Council officers are trying to track down the source of a powerful stench that has been offending the noses of local people.
People in Aldenham, Shenley, Borehamwood and Radlett have taken to social media to complain about the vile aroma that has been permeating the air for the past couple of days.
The foul smell was particularly potent yesterday, forcing people to close windows and doors despite the blazing temperatures.
Phoebe Jascourt tweeted yesterday: “Borehamwood smells like feet and sick right now.”
David Farrell moaned: “Borehamwood honestly smells of one massive fart.”
Cameron Rishover complained: “Am I the only one smelling sick everywhere I go. Bushey, Radlett, Borehamwood, Elstree...”
Tia Richards tweeted: “Shenley stinks of manure, my whole family are sitting with jumpers on covering our faces #countrysidelyfe.”
Other residents complained about being forced do their washing again because the smell had permeated clothes hanging on the line.
Although it has eased off in Borehamwood today the aroma is still lingering in Radlett and Shenley.
Speculation about the causes ranged from smelly pigs to malodourous sewage works and composting sites to spreading manure.
However, no one has yet been able to track down the source of the stench.
A spokeswoman for Hertsmere Borough Council said she had received ten complaints from members of the public about the aroma.
She said: “We are working with The Environement Agency to try and track down the source of the smell.
“We expect to know by Monday.”
