Elstree and Borehamwood Rotary Club to visit Offenburg in Germany
A rotary club will be broadening its horizons by visiting a town in Germany.
Members of Elstree and Borehamwood Rotary Club will travel to Offenburg in the south west of the country at the end of this month.
Surrounded by vineyards, the town is twinned with Borehamwood and has held regular exchanges with the twin town association.
However, this year will be the first time the Rotary Club has ventured there.
During the two day visit, which begins on September 27, the 12 travellers will meet the town’s mayor, Frau Edith Schreiner, who is also a Rotarian
They will be treated to a guided tour of Offenburg, have the chance to sample wine and beer at its vineyards and breweries, visit local tourist attractions and strengthen the links with the town.
Rotary Club president Cynthia Barker is very much looking forward to the visit.
She said: “This visit will be a very good thing for the club.
“The Rotary Club has 1.2 million members worldwide and it is important to deepen links with them.
“Elstree and Borehamwood Rotary Club is very traditional and does the same things all the time.
“This visit will be a chance to learn things from other clubs and find out how they go about raising money.”
The businesswoman added strengthening links with Offenburg would have commercial benefits and would make any charity donations to towns in Germany easier.
She added: “As well as being fun, with visits to breweries and vineyards, this visit will be a chance to develop fellowship and friendship with the town.
“I did not expect Offenburg to provide so many activities for us.
“I’m looking forward to the return visit in two years time when it will be our chance to show them what Borehamwood has to offer.”
