Next round of Hertfordshire County Council's Ready to Switch Scheme open
This August is set to be one of the hottest on record, but the council is reminding members of the public that winter is not far away.
People can now sign up to Hertfordshire County Council’s ready to switch scheme, which could drastically reduce their heating bills.
Launched in November, the programme works by combining the buying power of the county’s residents with that of two million others from across the country.
The scheme works through a reverse auction at which energy suppliers are invited to bid the lowest price to supply the energy to all those signed up for it.
Cabinet member for resources Derrick Ashley said: “It might seem strange to start talking about heating bills in the middle of summer, but this is exactly the right time to look into how you can keep your gas and electricity bills down this winter.
“Our Ready to Switch scheme is a great way to check that you aren’t paying over the odds for your energy and makes finding a cheaper deal on your energy bills as simple as a click of a mouse.”
Signing up online can enable residents to save up to £300 on their annual gas and electricity bills.
After being informed of the price, residents who registered will then have three weeks to confirm whether they want to go through with the switch or not.
There is no obligation to take up the offer to switch.
Cllr Ashley added: "As well as knowing that you’re getting a good deal, for every resident who switches energy supplier our ‘Keep Warm, Stay Well’ campaign receives a referral fee.
“The scheme supports vulnerable residents, young and oldm, who are struggling to keep warm in their homes."
The deadline to register is October 15.
