A motorist who was left with serious leg injuries after a car crash has now been arrested in connection with the death of an 11-year-old girl.

The 52-year-old man remains in a serious condition in hospital after the grey Volkswagen Golf he was driving crashed into the Elstree Hill Roundabout at 12.15am on Saturday morning.

He is now in police custody having been arrested in connection with the death of Rebecca Thompson, 11, who was found dead at her home in Homefield Road, Bushey, on Saturday afternoon.

The arrested man is also from Bushey and will be interviewed after doctors have declared him fit enough to speak to police officers.

Officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary are now keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle, whose registration plate is OV61 NVK, prior to it taking place.

Detective Inspector John Arthur, from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit, said: “Did you see the Volkswagen Golf which would have been driven at high speed just prior to the crash at the Elstree Hill roundabout in the early hours of Saturday morning?

“This is a very important element to this investigation.”
