In a final bid to stop a rail freight terminal near Radlett, campaigners hit town on Saturday morning to collect more signatures for their growing petition.

Activists from action group STRIFE are aiming to reach 10,000 signatures with their petition against the proposed terminal on the former Radlett aerodrome site in Park Street.

If the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, campaigners will be given five minutes to argue their case at Hertfordshire County Council.

Volunteers took to the streets from 9.30am to 12pm in Radlett and St Albans.

Cathy Bolshaw, co-ordinator for STRIFE, said around two hundred people added their names in Radlett and a similar number signed up in St Albans.

Online, just over 8,800 have signed the petition, but the total number including the paper copies has yet to be determined.

If STRiFE is given its five minutes to debate at County Hall on March 26, residents will be allowed to attend.

"Radlett Aerodrome fun place for rich boys".

What on earth are you talking about?

Radlett aerodrome is north of the M25 behind Park Street and was an aircraft manufacturing site until 1969 when Handley Page went bust. The site closed in 1970 and has been derelict fields ever since. Not what I would call a fun place for rich boys.
