Frustration grows at lack of answers on 'unsafe' Stirling Corner on border of Barnet and Borehamwood

Campaigners are calling for permanent traffic lights to be installed in conjunction with pedestrian crossings Campaigners are calling for permanent traffic lights to be installed in conjunction with pedestrian crossings

Campaigners fighting for improved safety measures at Stirling Corner were left frustrated by a lack of answers at a public meeting last night.

Supporters turned out to the council’s offices in Elstree Way in the hope of progress on the long-running issue.

But Transport for London (TfL) was unable to send a representative, meaning questions over new cameras at the roundabout and possible speed limit reductions were left unanswered.

Long term campaigner Sue Alford arranged the discussion and explained that she is hoping to meet with TfL in the coming weeks to move closer to a solution.

Three cameras have been erected to monitor the site, where there are currently part-time traffic signals in place between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

Campaigners are calling for permanent traffic lights to be installed in conjunction with pedestrian crossings.

It is also hoped that the current speed limit of 70mph on roads approaching the roundabout will be reduced to 50mph in order to make the junction safer.

Barnet Council leader Richard Cornelius has written to Boris Johnson about the issue.

The next public meeting on the subject will take place in July, at which TFL are expected to be present.

I agree that this junction does need some consideration, but to say The signals are said to be confusing drivers so campaigners are calling for permanent traffic lights to be installed in conjunction with pedestrian crossings. This is ridiculous, they are either on or off. What is confusing. This is just people making a bigger issue than needed. The road markings are fine, providing every motorist sticks to the correct lane and doesn't cut across lanes.
There are traffic lights on Barnet Lane next to Morrisons. All that is needed is two foot bridges over either side of Stirling corner covering the A1 and a set of traffic lights on Barnet Road (A411) which are only activated when a pedestrian presses the button to avoid traffic building. It's that simple. The exit onto Stirling Corner may need to be address from Stirling Way, possibly to entry only from the roundabout it self. What is so difficult people?

Hello Churcheto - if i hadn't spent 8 hours filming around Stirling Corner to make the film referred to in this article, then i too would have said the same thing. However watch my film below and you will see that a number of cars all stopped at the white line before the 3.30pm time, as they didn't know if the traffic lights were working or had failed etc. We shouldn't assume that people are familiar with the roundabout or know the times these traffic lights are on as i believe they just say part-time signals on the signage and not the actual hours. Hence thats why i am requesting 24/7 traffic lights rather than part-time as it makes it far more simpler for everyone including those crossing the road, which they will be able to do by default if we get 24/7 traffic lights which work perfectly well at all the other roundabouts on the A1 route. Watch my short film and you'll see more clearly the realities of what road users actually do: http://youtu.be/spqs

Just to correct some inaccuracies. The Transport Forum is organised by Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council 3 times a year to allow the public to discuss a range of issues concerning transport. E & B/wood clerk invites a number of organisations to attend to answer concerns brought by public and councillors alike.
No Barnet Councillor has ever attended the Transport Forum in my memory although they have been invited on numerous occasions.
Cllr Clive Butchins chairs the meeting and has worked with campaigners to try to get TfL to come to the Table and listen. The video on youtube organised by Sue Alford clearly shows that plans TfL had for Stirling Corner Roundabout would have improved road safety but have been shelved.

I tend not to have to cross Stirling Corner in rush hour, but it can be bad/dangerous even at off-peak times.

If you wish to continue along the A1 from Apex Corner across Stirling Corner, you tend to begin indicating left just as you pass the A411 junction to Borehamwood. This is confusing because it looks as if you maybe entering the supermarket, but there really isn't sufficient distance to start indicating as you pass the supermarket entrance to show that you intend to carry straight on.

As for pedestrians trying to get to the supermarket from Barnet that really must be a nightmare. I am an able person, but I don't think I would wish to risk my safety in crossing this very wide roundabout when traffic can approach at any second. Surely Morrisons if they want their customers to arrive safely they could fund a footbridge across the road.

It must also be a nightmare for any motorist that wishes to leave the supermarket and rejoin the roundabout to go towards Borehamwood or Mill Hill.

I am all in favour of traffic lights 24/7 to help keep the junction safe, so TFL let us see some action.
