Top Hertfordshire fireman Roy Wilsher to become part-time police chief executive

Hertfordshire’s most senior firefighter is set to become the part time chief executive of the county's police.

Roy Wilsher is being lined up to serve as Andrew White’s replacement at the police and crime commissioner's office, after Hertfordshire County Council’s employment committee approved the move.

It is understood Mr Wilsher, who currently earns more than £130,000 as the county’s director of community protection and chief fire officer, will take on the new position for the equivalent of two days a week.

He is due to appear alongside police and crime commissioner David Lloyd at a Police and Crime Panel meeting on March 14 to seek approval for the appointment.

Mr Lloyd described the proposed appointment as an opportunity to "bring local partnership working together."

The introduction of a part-time replacement once Mr White leaves in April - initially on a one year secondment - is expected to save the taxpayer £100,000.

Firstly, "top fireman"? He ceased to be a fireman when he rose above a certain rank. Top fireman fight fires not budgets.

Secondly, what commercial expertise does he bring to the table when performing this new part time role?

Is he a trained accountant, has he held a senior position in a national/multi national company?

In short I expect the answer is no, in reality he is a career man who carved himself a nice little number starting out as a fireman.

Pray tell me is this appointment good for the people of Hertfordshire I, for one, think it is not.

I am rather confused ! Does this mean that his existing job will reduce his salary pro rata now that he will only be working for 3 days which begs the question the job could not have been that busy if he can lose 2 days to take on another job ! No wonder the council tax funds are so stretched.

I've just had a great moneysaving idea, give him a couple of bandages and a box of plasters and he can take on the job of C.E.O. of the East of England Ambulance Service, part time of course.

Whoever heads up H.M. Coastguards needs to watch his back, this chap might be going for the big 4 or should I say big 5, I don't want to offend the A.A.

The old boys network is alive and well in the public sector, as usual.

"The introduction of a part-time replacement once Mr White leaves in April - initially on a one year secondment - is expected to save the taxpayer £100,000." The taxpayer would save even more if this useless, overpaid, 'public servant' got the chop - with his own axe!
