More than one in 25 children in Hertfordshire has not been allocated a place at one of their preferred secondary schools.

The figures may come as a shock to parents who were able to rank four schools rather than three for the first time this year.

Today, young people across the county will find out whether they are one of the unlucky 496 pupils, or are among the 11,660 who have secured a place at a school of their choice.

Allocation emails will be sent after 6pm to all parents who have confirmed their email address.

Frances Button, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: "I do appreciate that some parents may be disappointed with the school they have been allocated, but would encourage them to visit the school and speak to the headteacher before dismissing the offered place. They may be pleasantly surprised by what they see.”

Just over 80 per cent of children gained a place at their first-ranked school, and 225 children were allocated their fourth preference.

All applicants who have not been offered their first choice will automatically be placed on a "continuing interest" list for any Hertfordshire schools named higher on their application form than the school offered.
