They are man’s best friend and make excellent detectives, so a new scheme to make sure police dogs are well treated is being launched in Hertfordshire.

Volunteers make surprise visits to training days to check the animals are safe, healthy and happy in the scheme, which also includes Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Under the project, which is backed by charity Dogs Trust, volunteers will report back to the Police and Crime Commissioners in the three areas.

Hertfordshire’s PCC, David Lloyd, said: “This is a unique arrangement that will ensure the dogs used in all three police force areas are healthy and able to provide a good service to the public.”

The project will officially start in April.
