Building work is underway at the new community centre which will be the “vibrant heart of the village”.

Children from St Teresa’s School, in Borehamwood, have drawn photos to give people an idea of what the new centre, which will open in autumn, will provide.

The artwork has gone up on the hoardings around the site, which is at 96 Shenley Road, showing the complex will house a library, museum and youth centre.

Local artist Mike Rollins has also had his artwork showcased around the site.

Councillor Richard Butler said he hoped the new community centre would bring the village feel back to Borehamwood.

He added: “It has ben a long time waiting, and I think it is a fantastic opportunity to bring people into the high street and the village.

“It will encourage people to spend money in shops when they would not have done before so it will be a great attraction.

“I hope it will help revive the high street and be the vibrant heart of our lovely village.”

The hoardings have been set up with a viewing port so people can see the work going on at the site.

The project is in partnership with Hertfordshire County Council, Hertsmere Borough Council, Elstree & Borehamwood Town Council and All Saints Church, in Shenley Road.

Robert Gordon, Leader of Hertfordshire County Council said: “This is a piece of major investment in the town providing modern facilities in the heart of Borehamwood.

“The new centre will enhance the opportunities available to local people across many areas of community life including leisure, culture, and church activities.”

The building will also replace the current library in Elstree Way, which will increase the amount of floorspace and computers to give the public free wi-fi throughout the building.

Activities for young children will also be provided at the centre.

Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, Morris Bright, said: “This development demonstrates the commitment of local partners to work together to develop fantastic new facilities to support the local community.”

Drawn photos? Do you write these articles with a hangover Anna?
I can just imagine it now, sandwiched between a charity shop and a deep fried chicken parlour- a hub of community culture and activity.

The only way to revive the 'Village' is to lower the rental charges on the shops, and ban anymore fast food outlets.
