Dog Watch scheme needs more members

Scooby-Doo has been helping sniff out crime for more than three decades – but now your dog has a chance to be a doggy detective.

People can find out more about Dog Watch and sign their pooch up to the scheme at a special event later this month.

The project, launched last year by PCSO Sophie Watson, encourages people to report any suspicious activity they see or hear when walking their dog.

She said: “Dog walkers are out at all different times of the day so have the chance to see things other people might miss.

“It is like a neighbourhood watch scheme for dog owners. Walkers will act as the eyes and ears of the community to make sure the area remains safe and secure.”

People who sign up to the scheme will be given a free goodie bag, including a poop scoop, Dalmatian toy alarm and UV security marking pen.

Members will also receive crime prevention advice and regular updates through the police’s online watch link about how their information has helped improve the area.

Councillor Charles Goldstein, portfolio-holder for community safety and chairman of Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership, said: “We’ve had a positive response since we launched the scheme, but we need more people to volunteer.

“As a Dog Watch volunteer, if you see or hear anything out of the ordinary, while out walking your dog, you are encouraged to report it as soon as you can.”

Members of Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership, which includes Hertsmere Borough Council and Hertfordshire Police, will be at Tesco on Tuesday 19 February from 2pm until 4pm.
