Aldenham students create clay army to remember those killed in Holocaust

Students paid tribute to the millions killed during the Holocaust by creating a touching memorial made out of clay.

Pupils and staff from Aldenham School in Elstree spent a week moulding 1,500 clay people as their way of paying respects to the millions of people who died in Holocausts.

The whole school, from years seven to 13, took part in the project - inspired by artist Antony Gormley's terra-cotta similar sculpture and Edvard Munch’s impressionist painting The Scream.

Year ten student Georgie Yeabsley, 14, said: “The Holocaust was a serious matter so it is very important we learn about what happened during lessons.

“It meant a lot to me to see people from all different races and religions take part in this school project.

“We must all come together as a community to make sure we stop racism and discrimination.”

The impressive display was put on show during a special assembly about the Holocaust at the Aldenham Road school yesterday.

Twelve-year-old Cameron McGeary said: “It was a chance for the whole school to reflect on this event in history to make sure it does not happen again.

“Everyone from the school contributed and I was feeling very proud with the finished result. It was a powerful way to remember what happened in the Holocaust.”
