Memories of a centre “where all the magic happened” are wanted to help the hub celebrate a milestone birthday.
The well-loved Maxwell Park Centre, in Borehamwood, has been at the heart of the community for 50 years this July.
The Lynx, as it was affectionately dubbed, would be full of teenagers and young adults listening to live bands – such as Fleetwood Mac and The Who – who performed there before becoming famous.
June Kimpton, the centre’s secretary, said: “I remember this place from my childhood. My sister was seven years older than me and I was so jealous she could come here.
“It was in demand and a very busy place, everyone loved it. For its anniversary we thought it would be great to compile as many memories as we can find.
“A lot of people who are in their 60s and grew up here should remember this place well.
“I spoke to one woman who had her wedding reception here and another who still has her old membership card. That is pretty amazing.”
The centre, which was originally bought for the community by businessman Ivor Bayley, will celebrate its birthday on Sunday, July 14, 2013, with a special party.
Nowadays, all different types of activities – from indoor bowls and table tennis to line dancing and zumba classes, are offered at the centre.
Mrs Kimtpon added: “We are looking for any kind of memorabilia or memories to help bring the history of this place alive. After all, this is where all the magic happened.”
