Borehamwood's drivers warned after catalytic converter and spare wheel thefts

Police are urging motorists to be on guard after a recent increase in catalytic converter and spare wheel thefts.

Hertfordshire Constabulary is encouraging drivers to park their vehicles in garages and fit suitable locking devices to their spare wheel carriers to deter thieves.

Inspector Paul Lawrence, from the crime reduction unit, said: "There’s been a rise in the theft of catalytic converters in recent weeks, particularly from commercial diesel vans, because the units are easier to remove. We have also seen a rise in the theft of spare wheels, which are accessible from underneath on some vehicles.

"These items are being stolen for their scrap metal value, and they are difficult to secure so we are asking all members of the community to help us catch these thieves.

We are also working with scrap dealers across the county to ensure that any stolen items come to our attention immediately."
