East of England Ambulance Service deal with double number of calls in Hertfordshire over New Years Eve

Paramedics responded to nearly 350 calls as party-goers celebrated the New Year – twice as many as an average night.

A total of 347 calls were dealt with by the East of England Ambulance Service in Hertfordshire over the 12 hours from 7pm – around 30 an hour.

Compared to the first Saturday in December, ambulance crews across only responded to 168 calls between the hours of 7pm and 7am.

The numbers were also higher than last year, with frontline staff responding to 300 calls throughout the whole of Hertfordshire during the New Year celebrations in 2011/12.

The service boosted resources to prepare for the busiest night of the year, with initiatives such as “see and treat” tents and SOS buses to help keep hospital admissions low.
