A woman was shocked after a car smashed through her garden wall in the middle of the night.

Louise Waithera, of Bullhead Road, Borehamwood, was woken at 12:45am on Saturday morning by a loud crash from the front of her house.

A a car had hit her garden wall, the wall was destroyed and the driver drove off, not leaving his details.

Ms Waithera, 42, said: “When I came outside the wall was totally destroyed.

“I’m just shocked it happened. They must have been driving at such a high speed to do that much damage.

“It’s very worrying. If the wall and my car hadn’t been there the car would have come straight into my living room.

“This is a residential area and there is a school nearby. People shouldn’t be going that fast. They could have killed someone.”

The mother of two says she has contacted police about the incident and managed to provide them with the vehicle's number plate which was left among the debris.

Neighbour Donna Smith said: “We heard a huge bang because the car hit the wall with such force.

“I was shocked because we let our kids play out in the front garden and if it had been in the day someone could have been badly hurt.”

Police believe the driver hit the wall and then attempted to drive away from the scene, but only managed to get as far as Hillside Avenue, where the car was abandoned.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, driving under the influence of drink and drugs and a public order offence.

He was bailed and is due return to Hatfield Police Station on December 22.
