When his grandma died of multiple sclerosis, Tom Dousie was determined to make sure her legacy lived on.

So he contacted the MS Society in a bid to become a fundraising champion for the cause, in memory of Betty Dousie who passed away in January.

The 85-year-old was diagnosed with the disease in her legs when she was in her 30s, but it did not become serious until she hit 50.

Inspired by her determined spirit, the chatterbox did the impossible, according to his mum Karen, and spent 26 hours doing a sponsored silence.

Ten-year-old Tom said: “Grandma was always smiling and never let her disease get her down, despite having MS. She always looked on the bright side of things, she was a true inspiration.

“I thought I would challenge myself and do a sponsored silence at school during the day. All my teachers were really shocked because I am the most talkative person ever and usually do not shut up.

“Nobody thought I would actually see it through. I had to write on a blackboard if I wanted to communicate with anyone.”

The year-six student at Clore Shalom School, in Shenley, also swam a total of 70 lengths at the Venue Leisure Centre, in Shenley Road, to raise cash for the cause.

So far he has raised £150 but is still awaiting sponsorship from other friends and family.

The Watford FC supporter is now hoping to sell his old computer games, DVDs and toys to raise more cash for the MS Society.

He added: “It makes me feel quite proud knowing all I have done, especially because I know my grandma would have been proud of me too.”
