Pupils warned of truancy patrols in Hertsmere

Special truancy patrols are being used to tackle children spotted on the borough's streets during school hours.

Officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary spoke to 22 youngsters found out of school on one afternoon last week.

A number of the pupils were escorted back to their classrooms.

Among those stopped were children from schools in London and Watford who had travelled to Hertsmere.

Schools' Police Community Support Officer Paul Cook said: "Many children are off school for sickness or health-related reasons, but parents need to be aware - if your child is off school sick, they should be at home resting.

"Truancy patrols are ongoing in the Hertsmere area and they are a regular event.

"We want children to be in school where it is safe.

"If they are out on the streets unsupervised, there is a risk of them being injured or being involved in anti-social behaviour."

Who is paying for these checks? Children are their parents responsibility. If a child does not turn up for school can the school not contact parents who then take responsibility?
