Pensioner foils Borehamwood burglary attempt
A conman attempted to trick his way into a pensioner's Borehamwood home after claiming he needed to turn off the water supply.
The incident happened at around 12.50pm on Tuesday in Grantham Green.
The 79-year-old refused to allow the man into his home and the suspect ran off towards Dacre Gardens.
He is described as white, aged between 30 and 40, around 5ft 6ins tall and slim.
Hertfordshire Constabulary said residents who are not expecting visitors should use chains to check who is at the door.
Andy Smith, managing director of Three Valleys Water, the company which provides water across the county, said it was "very unlikely" staff from his company would ever cold call.
He added: "If the caller has not made an appointment, ask them to wait outside and contact us on 0845 782 3333 to confirm their identity - genuine callers will not mind waiting.
"Our staff wear uniforms bearing the company logo and will show an identity card at the door.
"In an emergency, such as a burst pipe, engineers or staff do not need to come into your home."
Anyone with information about the attempted distraction burglary should contact PC Jack Wynn at Borehamwood police station on 0845 33 00 222, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
