| New powers: the environment officers pick up their certificates |
A team of council officers has been granted special powers by the police to allow them to tackle under-age drinkers and smokers.
At a ceremony on Monday last week, officers from Hertsmere Borough Council's environmental health team were awarded the ability to confiscate alcohol and tobacco from under-age children, and deal with licensing matters and nuisance behaviour.
They received the powers as part of the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS).
The accredited officers will now wear a nationally recognised badge and will also carry a special identification card.
Hertsmere Chief Inspector Mark Hunter presented the awards and said: "The accreditation scheme is one of the Government initiatives around extending the policing family.
"It has certainly proved to be the case that we achieve so much when we work together in partnership. We already work closely with the council and have gained numerous benefits from that.
"I have no doubt that working alongside teams like environmental health will continue to pay dividends for the whole community."
Council leader Morris Bright said: "The accreditation means that our officers will have more power to enforce legislation relating to issues such as licensing and fly-tipping which will benefit local communities.
"Our environmental health team are extremely dedicated and I congratulate them on this achievement."
The officers awarded certificates were:
Suneeta Kuma, principal environmental health officer (EHO)
Chris Gascoine, chief EHO
Paul Sawyer, assistant chief EHO
Gavin Burns, principal EHO
Michael Georgiou, principal EHO
Phil Andrews, principal licensing officer
Sarah Hoggett, senior EHO
Susan Hardy, licensing enforcement officer
Lesley Lee, animal warden

The strange thing here is that you seldom see a police officer out on the streets without his/her anti stab vest. God help the kindly souls of the EH team. One will surely fall foul to some lout with a knife and all in the name of policing on the cheap!!

I doubt this lot will take one cigarrette off one underage smoker. Just drive past McDonalds on a Friday night to see the hoardes of scum outside it.
What you really need is the police, some clubs and some riot gear and any youth standing outside McDonalds and/or Dominoes given a beating.
they will laugh in the face of these dimwit councillors. remember, you can't touch them or do anything to them - its their human rights innit.
all you can say is "give me those cigarrettes" and they will laugh in your stupid face. "its me human rights to be a waste of space innit"
this is just a mockery.
