    Abortion is the bigger issue
Shadow environment secretary Peter Ainsworth on a vist to Bhaktivedanta Manor
Shadow environment secretary Peter Ainsworth on a vist to Bhaktivedanta Manor

I could not avoid a certain feeling of cynicism on reading the latest chapter of the Gangotri saga (Shadow secretary tours Gangotri death sanctuary', March 14).

Indeed the cynicism was coupled with amusement at the Conservative Party's attempt to leap aboard the politically correct bandwagon.

In recent months both television and the press have reported on the efforts of Indian women, in the sub-continent and even here in the UK, to obtain selective abortions, often, it must be said, as a result of extreme family pressures, to ensure the birth of boy babies rather than girls.

The practice is illegal in India, but thrives nonetheless.

I have not seen any reports from Bhaktivedanta Manor opposing or even deploring this practice.

I hope I am wrong and I would like an assurance from Bhaktivedanta Manor that they do, in fact, use any influence they may have to fight this deplorable practice.

As far as the Conservatives are concerned, I wonder what Messrs Ainsworth and Vara's positions are on the Govern-ment's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill?

Apparently our Hertsmere MP, James Clappison, sadly supports this dreadful measure.

In Bhagavad-gétä (7.11) it is said: dharmäviruddho bhüteñu kämo 'smi bharatarñabha. Sex is allowed only for the begetting of children, not for enjoyment. One can indulge in sex to beget a good child for the benefit of the family, society and world. Otherwise, sex is against the rules and regulations of religious life. A materialistic person does not believe that everything is managed in nature, and he does not know that if one does something wrong, he is witnessed by different demigods. A person enjoys illicit sex, and due to his blind, lusty desire, he thinks that no one can see him, but this illicit sex is thoroughly observed by the agents of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore the person is punished in so many ways, presently in Kali-yuga there are many pregnancies due to illicit sex, and sometimes abortions ensue. These sinful activities are witnessed by the agents of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and a man and woman who create such a situation are punished in the future by the stringent laws of material nature (daivé hy eñä guëa-mayé mama mäyä duratyayä ). Illicit sex is never excused, and those who indulge in it are punished life after life. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gétä (16.20):
    äsuréà yonim äpannä
    müòhä janmani janmani
    mäm apräpyaiva kaunteya
    tato yänty adhamäà gatim
"Attaining repeated birth among the species of demoniac life, such persons can never approach Me. Gradually they sink down to the most abominable type of existence."
The Supreme Personality of Godhead does not allow anyone to act against the stringent laws of material nature; therefore illicit sex is punished life after life. Illicit sex creates pregnancies, and these unwanted pregnancies lead to abortion. Those involved become implicated in these sins, so much so that they are punished in the same way the next life. Thus in the next life they also enter the womb of a mother and are killed in the same way. All these things can be avoided by remaining on the transcendental platform of Kåñëa consciousness. In this way one does not commit sinful activity. Illicit sex is the most prominent sin due to lusty desire. When one associates with the mode of passion, he is implicated in suffering life after life.

    Dear Tom,
    what you say is true.
With regard to the HFE bill, Mr Clappisons letter to me suggests he is still giving some thought to the matter - though I suspect your assessment is correct.
I can only say one thing to him:

    PLEASE STOP THIS BILL!

If this becomes law it is not just cloning, and human-animal hybrids we are opening the floodgates to. There are other scary results that are not getting the press.

For example - if you end up unconscious and are admitted to hospital for treatment, doctors will have the right to remove sperm/eggs for this research without your knowledge or consent.
The same applies to our children - parental consent will not be necessary.

There are all sorts of dreadful consequences to this. I won't list them all here. But I am astounded that any single good this bill might bring about could ever be worth this huge loss of personal freedom.

We would be crazy to hand this much power to any group - particularly scientists. Why particularly - well because for many scientists our humanity is second to our potential....

To add to the confusion there is talk of reducing the access to abortion (reducing the legal limit) via this bill. Please people - this is a red herring. I am pro-life and wish that mothers and infants might never be touched by abortion, having seen the destruction of lives it causes. but I appeal to all - don't accept this HFE bill. It is an attack on human life in the worst possible way.
No good can come of it.

It is outrageous that religious minorities are putting pressure on MPs to oppose scientific research which could help suffers from Parkinson, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers, etc. Putting false information about the details of the Bill, they claim "sanctitiy of human life" about a small group of cells on a petri dish up to 14 days only, whilst ignoring the sanctitiy of life of those who might benefit from the research. Do these people refuse medical treatment themselves, which is always based on scientific research? I think not! Bravo to those MPs who consider their sick constituents more than religious minority false information.
