Plans to close Radlett Fire Station could be axed at a crunch meeting of the county's fire chiefs on Monday.

Hertfordshire County Council's cabinet is meeting to decide whether to approve plans to cut fire services across the county.

If the proposals are rejected, Radlett Fire Station will be saved from closure.

But if approved, an official 12-week public consultation will begin on November 1, after which the cabinet could decide to close the station permanently from next April.

Recently, the public has been left confused over the exact details of the public consultation. This week, Hertfordshire's Chief Fire Officer, Roy Wilsher, confirmed that although the official consultation had not yet started, all letters already sent in would be considered if the plans are initially approved on Monday.

The Save Radlett Fire Station Action Group, a committee set up to campaign against the station's closure, has drawn up a letter setting out a list of six key objections to Mr Wilsher's Integrated Risk Management Plan.

The group comprises Radlett residents, businesses, parents of children at 14 schools in the area, rail, road and airspace users and other interested parties.

The arguments they list are: the loss of the 14 trained firefighters who work to educate the community on fire prevention training and first-aid response; the savings of £90,000 per year, which they see as a modest amount to close a fire station; the likely deterioration in emergency response times; the proposal's focus on fires rather than a total risk assessment, taking into account emergencies such as road accidents and floodings; the lack of considerations such as the threat of terrorism; and the wider implications of the plan, including added pressure on neighbouring firefighting crews at Borehamwood and Garston.

In the letter to Mr Wilsher, Carolynne Brown, chairman of the group, said: "We hope that, like us, you will be working to reverse this appalling, ill-conceived decision which will put us all at increased risk and damage the quintessential spirit of a community."

To comment on the closure, write to Radlett Fire Station, 201 Watling Street, Radlett, Herts, WD7 7AW, and they will pass letters directly to the Chief Fire Officer.
