Arrests follow fly-tipping crackdown
An operation targeting fly-tippers and rogue traders in Borehamwood resulted in three arrests last week.
Of 32 vehicles stopped by police in Elstree Way, four were found to be unroadworthy and two had no insurance.
Three people were arrested for various offences and one driver was disqualified.
Hertfordshire Constabulary's week-long Operation Raj was designed to spot vehicles carrying waste in Hertsmere, in an attempt to crack down on people illegally dumping rubbish.
The operation was run by a partnership between the police, Environment Agency, Hertsmere Borough Council, Vehicle Operator and Services Agency (VOSA), and Trading Standards.
Nat Landau, Hertsmere's community safety sergeant, said: "These were joint operations using the powers and expertise of various agencies in order to detect offenders who travel large distances in order to dump waste, commit a variety of crimes and cause annoyance and distress to our residents in Hertsmere.
"The results are really quite eye-opening and we will continue to run these operations on a regular basis."
Of the drivers pulled over during the week, one person was issued with a fixed penalty notice after he was alleged to have been driving a manual vehicle on an automatic licence.
One vehicle was found to be overloaded with builders' rubble, another four had vehicle defects including faulty lights or windscreen wipers.
A further four were served prohibition notices, meaning their vehicles had to be fixed straight away and then brought back to the checkpoint so officers could sign them off.
Two drivers were given fixed penalty notices for smoking in their work vehicles and a further 12 were given advice about the same issue.
The Environment Agency handed out penalty notices for drivers who did not have an official waste carriers' licence.
Councillor Jean Heywood, the council's environment portfolio holder, said: "I'm really pleased with the results of the operation which would not have been so successful without partnership working.
"It's great that our environmental heath officers can team up with police and other agencies to help crack down on people illegally carrying and dumping waste in the borough."
