Elstree & Borehamwood station is set to be upgraded to make rail travel more accessible for disabled and elderly passengers as part of plans announced by the Government.

Among the improvements will be step-free access to the Station Road building, better lighting, new timetable screens and improved facilities for people who use hearing aids.

It is one of 40 stations to benefit from the Department for Transport's Access for All project, which will see £370 million spent on creating obstacle-free paths and routes around travel terminals.

Engineers from Network Rail will carry out work at the station during the next 18 months to determine exactly what changes need to be made, before beginning construction work.

The upgrades are due to be completed between 2012 and 2015.

Borehamwood Brookmeadow ward councillor Ian Feeney said: "Access has always been a major problem for this station. Cost seems to have been the main issue and argument used for not resolving this.

"To date, rail companies have been reluctant to grasp the nettle and now the Government has thankfully stepped in.

"This will be good news for Borehamwood and I hope the upgrade will improve the station's facilities and address the long overdue needs of the disabled, elderly and people with buggies, who should have the same rights and enjoy the equivalent freedom of travel that the rest of us take for granted."

Speaking last Thursday, Rail Minister Tom Harris said: "More people than ever before are taking the train, but for some it can be like facing an obstacle course.

"I'm happy to announce this latest tranche of stations to receive Access for All funding, which will make a significant improvement to people's journeys."

Robin Gisby, Network Rail director of operations and customer services, said: "These essential new facilities will make station and platform access much easier for existing and new passengers, particularly people with disabilities, those carrying heavy luggage and parents with prams.

"Our dedicated project team will conduct feasibility studies to identify the improvements necessary to provide level access."

I notice there is no mention of installing a lift.

I am waiting to see the detail on this. I believe a lift on each platform would be fundamental to any upgrade of the station, how else would those people this uprade is aimed at access the station? I guess we will have to watch this space for now.

Whilst it is good to see that "something" will be done to help the disabled and elderly, what about the thousands of other users that have to use this awful station each day. First, the station isn't even a real building, its a portakabin. Secondly, the stairway is a danger with thousands of people tramping over it at once. Thirdly, the stairway is obviously used as a home by some stinking tramps as it always smells of urine up there. Fourthly, the ticket barriers are pathetic. They are always broken or take a minute for a ticket to be fed through - the normal ticket barriers on the tube which are now twenty years old are far better. Fifthly, the doors into the station and onto the station are too narrow when it is busy. Sixthly, the new clock is so bad you have to stand right next to it to see it. If you are halfway up the platform you can't read it.

Apart from that, its great.

Jack, you are obviously a station user and someone who is well versed and experienced on the subject, why dont you offer your services as a consultant on this project.

Ian, unfortunately I don't believe that the powers that be would be as insightful as to ask people who use the station. They will just do what they want, and you can bet your bottom dollar it will be expensive and lousy.

You are ever the eternal optimist Jack.

Let us hope that your prediction is not the case.

Now where did I put my "half full" glass of water?

Cheers

I hope the improvements will include lifts not only for the disabled but for the many parents like myself who have very young children who are in buggies.

Those stairs are a hazard and on more then one occasion i have struggled with my 2 children one of whom is only just walking.

Many thanks though to the kind hearted people who realise my troubles when using the stairs with a toddler who runs off at every occasion and help me with my baby in the buggy and hold on to my toddler so she does not run on to the tracks.

This has always been an issue well before i had children and will continue unless lifts are installed so please, guys who are going to be making improvemets, think of lifts for people like me and those other citizens unable to manage the stairs.

Thanks

and please don't build an underpass for hoodies to lurk in and mug old people, the disabled and young mothers!

Have to agree with Jack and Donna.
That station needs pulling down and re-building.
A great many years ago when my children were small it was a nightmare travelling to and from B/Wood station and it is no different now. Some people helped but many would just push into the little ones and it was horrendous.
As am now disabled, I find it is better to go to Potters Bar and travel from there mostly due to the stairs and lack of facitlites at B/Wood but also due to overcrowding on that line.
A lift or covered escalator would be nice and no doubt there will be cctv.
Whether they take passenger input into their decisions is unlikely so we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I can't believe they still have that portacabin!! I moved away from Borehamwood 8 years ago, last visited 2 years ago. I keep hearing the prices going up, yet nothing is getting done? I'm just glad I'm nowhere near it anymore!
