How do I arrange work experience?

By Louise Jones »

READER'S QUESTION

Our school has told us to set up a work experience placement for two weeks. I am really excited and want to make sure I go somewhere interesting and that will be useful for my future.

I am split between whether I want to work as a vet or an engineer in the future. My interests include mountain biking, animals and planes.

As I am not sure what I want to do for a career I want to pick somewhere that will let me learn general things about the world of work.

Could you suggest anywhere?

LOUISE'S ANSWER

First of all Adam, you really are right - work experience should be about getting to understand the world of work rather than a particular career area.

A Connexions Personal Adviser will be happy to give you some pointers as to how to find a company, although we do not actually set up work experience.

I do not know what school you attend but if you are in Year 11 most secondary schools will set up the work experience for you.

If you want to find your own you can usually do so but there are a number of things to be considered.

The best course of action for you will probably be to speak to a Connexions Personal Adviser either in your school or at our One Stop Shop in Manor Way, where you can get some help based on your own situation and requirements.

You can phone the One Stop Shop on 0208 953 8725 for help and advice or drop in any weekday afternoon between 1.30pm and 4pm.
