Whatever will be will be

By Suruchi Sharma »

It’s that time of year when we gaze into our crystal balls and start predicting the events of the next 12 months.

This year has already been touted the worst time we will ever have financially.

Everyone thinks New Year’s resolutions are such a waste of time yet every year we make at least one always mumbling afterwards about how we won’t be able to keep it. Making a resolution is tradition but it is also a natural human trait to want to do and be better.

This got me thinking if Borehamwood, Shenley, Radlett or Elstree wanted to do better what would they do? So here are my predictions for what could happen for the area for 2009.

A news story we have been following for a number of years is the creation of a theatre in Borehamwood.

Work started on the theatre in November last year and it is due to open on the Thrift Farm Lane site in September. Now the question is what will it be called and will its first production be Babes in the Wood?

Elstree Studios has seen some big-budget films coming through last year including The Other Boleyn Girl with Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman and Kick-ass starring Nicholas Cage.

For many people it may not be as highly active as it once was but the studios are clearly thriving film-wise at the moment.

It is clear that some more Hollywood names could appear at some stage this year. Perhaps we’ll see George Clooney and Brad Pitt buying a pint in the Hart & Spool in Shenley Road.

With Big Brother on at the moment and Dancing on Ice coming up in a few weeks it seems that the television wing is doing spectacularly well.

The High Street is said to be filled with charity and coffee shops. I’m sure this year there will be a lot more coffee shops and charity shops. Maybe one will combine the two and let customers drink coffee while browsing clothes.

Marks & Spencer started charging money for plastic bags last year so I predict the area could start a bag ban by the end of the year. Carry your shopping items in a Hessian bag, people will cry.

Can you think of any more predictions for the area? Post your comment below.

Change to Borehamwood & Elstree:

We are living in a suburb of London
This year some of Borehamwood organisations: Betta (the twin town association), the Lutheran church will produce a chain of Classic Concerts ( Local musicians & Local Divas!) that will raise our profile and put us on the map:

It is time some of us show what is good in Borehamwood & Elstree.
This is the year a black man is the most powerful man on earth so say it with me Borehamwood: “YES WE CAN"
We too, can make the place where we live a better place, it is down to all of us: Participate to the events organised locally, what this space! Have your say and come out of the Woods! Make your contribution.
We cannot just simply wait for others to do, let's do it ourselves!
