Apologies for not having blogged sooner. I really don’t know where the month has gone. I was indeed elected Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council on Monday 8th October and since then the days have just whizzed by. There are a lot more people trying to get hold of me now and it feels like everyone copies me in to every e-mail they send and wants my opinion on it – or feel as though they ought to ask for my opinion.

I very much enjoyed the Mayor's Civic Service held at St John the Baptist Church in Aldenham earlier today. It afforded an opportunity for the Mayor, councillors, officers and guests to come together to offer thanks and blessings for and to the Borough and those who live and work in it.

The relationship between the local council and the local press is somewhat symbiotic in that both sides often rely on each other - the council wanting to get its news out and the papers wanting to let people know what's going on at the council and how it affects residents and their lives. As in any relationship there can be conflicts - local press not wanting to do the politcial bidding of an administration without challenging those at the top as to what is going on and why. This process is healthy if not occasionally frustrating, particularly if you get a reporter who is convinced that there is a conspiracy going on when there isn't and there's nothing you can do to prove otherwise. But that's part and parcel of this relationship. I know it from both sides as a trained journalist and as an elected representative on both the Borough and Town councils.

On Wednesday evening ahead of the Full Council meeting, the Chief Constable of Hertfordshire Constabulary, Frank Whiteley, made a presentation to Councillors giving us an overview of policing matters in the Borough and in the County. Once again he was very complimentary about Hertsmere and how we as a council have worked closely with the police in recent years to work together with other agencies to bring down crime and the fear of crime in our towns.

As a television and film town I think we have all got rather used to seeing cameras in our high streets and soap stars in our supermarkets. And of course the regular queues of audiences attending the many shows being made at Elstree Studios.

So smoking has now been banned in pubs, clubs, businesses etc and so on. Tobacco companies have reported a drop in sales in July of 7% on the same period last year. Too early to tell if that's a blip or not. Certainly it feels a lot more pleasant going into some venues than it did before.
